Ask anyone in healthcare IT marketing what’s on their minds these days and undoubtedly one of the first word out of their mouths will be HIMSS—the 2015 Health Information Management Systems Society’s annual meeting, which is being held April 12-15. More than 38,000 healthcare IT professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world are expected to converge on Chicago for exceptional education, world-class speakers, cutting-edge products and nonstop networking.

With more than 300 education programs that feature keynotes, thought leader sessions, roundtable discussions and e-sessions, plus preconference symposia and workshops there’s no better way to get the lay of the land and hear what’s new than to go right to the sources and that’s just what PAN did. We are so appreciative that JoAnn Klinedist, CPHIMS, PMP, FHIMSS Vice President, Professional Development, and Karen Malone, Vice President, Meeting Services, took time out their undoubtedly busy schedules to speak with us. We can’t wait to thank them in person in a few weeks in Chicago!
Q. What are you most excited about at this year’s conference?
A. It’s so exciting to see everything come together. While the pillars of the conference—education, exhibition and networking—remain constant, each year we showcase the newest technologies, trends and solutions in health IT. We have more than 1,400 exhibitors this year—one thousand more than last year—and have quite a few new areas, including the Cybersecurity Command Center, the Disaster Preparedness Knowledge Center where organizations can explore the various health IT tools that should be proactively leveraged before, during and after various disasters and HX360, which spotlights next generation technology innovation and investment as it relates to workflow, care coordination and patient experience and truly re-invent healthcare delivery.
In addition, there is so much happening from an education perspective—from preconference to workshops to general sessions which are selected through a peer reviewed process.
Q. Tell us about the Cybersecurity Threat Center and how security is playing a role in HIMSS’ education and advocacy efforts.
Privacy and security are definitely significant issues today and HIMSS is integrally involved in cyber security through our education and advocacy efforts. The Cybersecurity Threat Center provides an interactive area for attendees to hear from industry and government experts about the dynamic cyber threat landscape, test their cybersecurity IQ and even participate in a daily “Capture the Flag” game where users compete for prizes to protect a virtual hospital network.
Q. Any advice for first time participants to help them take full advantage of the conference?
Forty percent of our attendees will be first time attendees and we offer preconference orientation webinars starting on April 1 as well as offer it on site to help answer any questions and take advantage of everything the conference has to offer.
Q. Anything else you want to tell attendees about?
We are very excited about our keynote speakers, who include Alexander W. Gourlay, Executive Vice President of Walgreens Boots Alliance and President of Walgreens, who will discuss Walgreens’ strategic approach to adopting technology to drive the company's vision, purpose and growth, and George W. Bush, 43 President of the United States who will offer his thoughts on his 8 years in the Oval Office, the challenges facing our nation and other issues.
As a leading PR firm in Boston, PAN is diligently working with its clients to prepare for the conference and we would love to speak with you at the show about your communications challenges and how we can work together.
