What is a meme? According to Wikipedia, an Internet meme is an idea, style or action which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the Internet, as with imitating the concept.

When conducting a campaign via social media don’t be afraid of creativity and leveraging memes to drive coverage and brand awareness for your clients business. The PAN team has created two social media campaigns leveraging memes for locally-based Carbonite, a provider of hybrid backup and recovery solutions for businesses. The goal for both campaigns was to take advantage of timely events such as World Backup Day and May the 4th (which pays homage to Carbonite’s roots) and promote Carbonite’s brand and the importance of data backup. Other organizations have leveraged meme’s via social media such as Oreo’s campaign, also around May the 4th.

When conducting creative campaigns, there are a couple of things to pay attention to. It is beneficial to plan out your tweets ahead of time, whether your social campaign is lasting one day or multiple days. Figure out which tweet goes along with which meme, if there are multiple. Think about leveraging a promoted tweet, would this be beneficial for your campaign? And lastly, the point of a meme is to have fun with it and let your creativity run wild.
